Garlic Makhana: Boosting Lactation with Flavour!

Adjusting to life with a newborn comes with its unique challenges, and nutrition plays a vital role in supporting both energy levels and lactation. Garlic Makhana is an excellent addition to your diet, offering the combined benefits of fox nuts (makhana) and garlic. Makhana is rich in calcium and antioxidants, while garlic is known for its lactation-supportive properties. This simple yet delicious recipe is not just a flavorful snack but also a nutrient-packed option that can help nursing mothers meet their nutritional needs. Easy to prepare and store in bulk, Garlic Makhana ensures you have a quick and nourishing bite handy whenever you need it.

Course: Snack

Servings: 4

Preparation Time: 10 minutes.

Total Time: 20 minutes.

Ingredients:

3 cups Phool makhanas (fox nuts)
7-8 cloves of garlic, crushed (with skin)
1 tbsp A2 ghee
¼  tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
1 tsp chaat masala
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
7-8 curry leaves
Salt as per taste

Method:

  1. Heat the ghee in a deep pan, add cumin and carom seeds, once crackled, add crushed garlic (with skin) and roast for a minute until it slightly changes color.
  2. Add curry leaves and hing powder and saute for a few seconds.
  3. Add turmeric powder, chaat masala, and salt as needed and saute for a few seconds.
  4. Immediately add makhana (fox nuts) and mix well. Fry on low flame for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the heat.
  5. Serve immediately or store it for later use.

Storage:

  • You can prepare this in bulk for 8–10 days and store in dry & airtight container.

Notes:

  • Makhana is rich in calcium and low in saturated fat, making it an ideal and healthy snack option. Additionally, it is believed to boost lactation.
  • Research has shown that infants whose mothers consumed garlic produced more breast milk due to the presence of Allyl Methyl Sulfide (AMS). This metabolite is found in higher concentrations during breastfeeding.
