This flaxseed chutney is a flavorful and nutrient-packed accompaniment, perfect for adding a boost of omega-3s, fiber, and plant protein to your meals. Flax seeds, combined with sesame seeds and coconut, offer a natural dose of healthy fats and minerals like calcium, which support digestion and reduce inflammation. This chutney pairs wonderfully with Indian staples like parathas, chapatis, dosas, and rice, adding a nutty flavor and health benefits to everyday meals.

Enjoy it as a side or mix it into flour for making spiced rotis—the best way to incorporate this chutney is as a daily accompaniment to enhance both flavor and nutrition.

Serves: 4
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Raw flax seeds: 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves: 1/2 cup
  • Coriander seeds: 4 tsp
  • Dry red chili: 2
  • Fresh grated coconut: 1/2 cup
  • Sesame seeds: 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds: 2 tsp
  • Black pepper: 2 tsp
  • Himalayan pink salt: 2 tsp
  • Asafoetida (hing): 2-3 pinches

Method:

  1. Dry Roast Ingredients:

    • Dry roast curry leaves for about 3 minutes on low heat until crisp.
    • Separately, roast coriander seeds, red chili, cumin seeds, sesame seeds, and black pepper one by one until each turns golden brown.
    • Lightly roast grated coconut until it browns slightly. Allow all ingredients to cool.
  2. Blend:

    • In a blender, add all roasted ingredients along with raw flax seeds, pink salt, and asafoetida.
    • Grind coarsely to make a powdery chutney.
  3. Serve:

    • Pair with parathas, chapatis, idlis, dosas, or rice. You can also mix it into flour for making flavored roti.

Tips:

  • Store the chutney in an airtight container and consume fresh to retain flaxseed’s omega-3 benefits.
